Quelli che stanno a nord

by Alberto Valtellina, Maurizio Panseri

August 1978. Four experienced mountaineers from Colere, amongst whom the mountain guide Livio Piantoni, open a difficult route on the north side of Presolana, in the Scalve valley. They name it "Placido route". Stunning footage has recorded the ascent. Thirty years later, Yuri Parimbelli and Robi Piantoni, Livio's son and a mountain guide himself, repeat that route. In the movie production, Roby Piantoni plays also the role of a go-between, since he searches for the protagonists of the first ascent in 1978. With his help, the film tells about the life of the inhabitants of the Scalve valley who haven't been insensitive to the allure of the Northern side of Presolana. We don't know if the witnesses of this ascent can be considered "privileged witnesses" of the life in the mountain, but the film doesn't aim at answering big questions. It shows us an ascent that follows a route found on a side of Presolana filmed 30 years ago on Super 8 and filmed again today with modern cameras. The images of yesterday and those of today speak about the same passion.
