Sennen-tabito

by Jinsei Tsuji

Tsurugi, a former piano player and morphine addict, is thirty-seven years old. Since his doctor has informed him that he only has one month left to live, he spends his days on a beach where he had spent his youth with his unforgotten wife, Yoko. On the beach he meets Yuma, Yoko's daughter, whit whom he forms a sort of paternal bond. Together they rescue a man who tries to commit suicide, and Yuma falls in love with him. Tsurugi starts restoring an old boat he has found on the shore. He asks to be bury on that boat because, as an old saying says, "If you bury somebody on a boat and let it go in the ocean, their soul will come back to that shore".
