La passion de Jeanne d'Arc

by Carl Theodor Dreyer

Joan of Arc's trial for heresy. Joan is interrogated by the French Clerical Court. Her judges try to make her say something that will discredit her claim, but she remains steadfast. When she is threatened with burning at the stake, she finally breaks and allows a priest to guide her hand in signing a confession, but after realizing that she has been unfaithful to God, she demands that the judges return and she recants her confession. As the flames rise, the crowds gather and people start a riot because they are convinced that they are burning a saint. The English troops and the crowd clash and people are killed. A masterpiece of the silent genre.
