1944. Several days before Finland pulls out of the war against the Soviet Union, Veikko, a Finnish sniper ( "Kukushka" in Finnish), is turned in by his Finnish and German compatriots for being a pacifist and, in their eyes, a would-be deserter. In prison he meets Ivan, a Captain in the Red Army, arrested because he was accused of anti-Soviet correspondence. The two manage to escape and find refuge at Anni's farm, a Sami reindeer farmer and widow, who starts a relationship with both
